Lyme disease is a tick-borne zoonosis caused by several genospecies of the spirochete
Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. 1 The organism normally cycles among small mammals and
birds, transmitted by ticks of the Ixodes ricinus complex. 2 Human illness is characterized by
diverse dermatologic, neurologic, rheumatologic, or cardiac abnormalities. 3–6 Also called
